Peter In the Navy 50cl

"PETER IN THE NAVY" is a Gin of navy strength. The Royal Navy used to designate as "Navy strength" the Gin that passed this empirical test: if gunpowder remained flammable even after being immersed in the Gin, then the distillate could be safely transported aboard Royal Navy warships. Navy measurement continued until the 1890s and still indicates a distillate with an alcohol content above 57 percent.
Navy Strength Gin has ancient origins. Long before it was possible to measure the alcohol by volume of a drink, the Royal Navy faced this problem: making sure that gunpowder remained flammable even if a cask of gin broke during transport. In the days of cannonballs and muskets, in fact, wet gunpowder represented a death sentence in battle. The label "Navy strenght" indicated the safe spirit to be carried on Navy ships and was affixed only to barrels that passed the empirical test: after dipping a few grains of gunpowder in gin, one would try to set them on fire. Navy measurement continued until 1890 and still indicates a distillate with an alcohol content above 57.15 percent.
